Trenchless Technology: How to Choose Between HDD Rigs and Pipe Jacking Machines?

            In the modern construction of urban underground pipelines, trenchless technology has become the absolute mainstream due to its environmental friendliness and high efficiency. Although both belong to trenchless technology, their working principles, applicable conditions, and engineering advantages are completely different.

1. Working Principle & Construction Direction 

  • HDD Rigs : HDD construction is typically operated from the ground surface. It drills a pilot hole along a designed curved path, reams the hole sequentially, and finally pulls the pipeline back. It is a "pulling" method.

  • Pipe Jacking Machines : Pipe jacking requires digging a launching shaft and a reception shaft beforehand. The machine is placed inside the underground shaft, and hydraulic jacks push the concrete or steel pipes forward into the soil behind the cutting head. It is a straight "pushing" method.

2. Applicable Pipeline Types & Diameters 

  • HDD Rigs: Best suited for flexible pipes such as PE pipes and steel pipes. It is highly efficient for small to medium diameters, though heavy-duty rigs can handle diameters up to Ф1000mm or more.

  • Pipe Jacking Machines: Mainly used for rigid pipes, especially heavy concrete pipes, clay pipes, or large-diameter steel pipes. It is the go-to solution for ultra-large diameters (such as municipal sewage mains where workers need to enter for maintenance).

3. Construction Distance & Path Flexibility 

  • HDD Rigs: The path can be curved. It can easily go down and cross under rivers, highways, or existing buildings, and then come back up to the surface. The crossing length can easily reach hundreds of meters (e.g., 400m or longer depending on rig capacity).

  • Pipe Jacking Machines: The path must be strictly straight. Because it relies on hydraulic jacks pushing from behind, any significant curve will cause immense friction and pushing failure.

4. Geological Adaptability 

         HDD Rigs: With high-end configurations (such as Danfoss/Rexroth hydraulic systems and heavy-duty mud recycling), advanced HDD rigs can handle everything from soft soil, clay, to complex hard rock formations by changing different drill bits.

         Pipe Jacking Machines: Highly dependent on the specific cutting head design. It has absolute advantages in high-water-table areas, soft silt, or shallow sand layers where surface settlement must be strictly controlled.
