Proper winter maintenance is critical to keep DTH drills running reliably in freezing temperatures, preventing costly downtime from fluid gelling, component freezing, and wear.

Below are key precautions:

• Use winter-grade hydraulic oil (e.g., YB-N32 or YB-N46) as lower viscosity ensures smooth hydraulic system operation in cold weather; never mix different oil types .

• Treat diesel fuel with cold-flow improvers or blend #2 diesel with #1 diesel to avoid gelling, and replace fuel filters to prevent clogging .

• Drain water from fuel tanks and air compressors daily—moisture freezes easily, damaging valves and pipelines .

• Ensure the oil mist lubricator functions properly; use rock drill oil with antifreeze additives for temperatures below 50°F (10°C) .

• Clean and lubricate drill rod threads with grease to prevent seizing; store unused rods with thread caps in dry areas .

• Disassemble and inspect the hammer: coat parts with oil for long-term storage, or blow air and oil through it for short-term idle periods .

• Clear snow/ice from walkways and platforms; equip workers with anti-slip footwear to avoid falls .

• Check air and hydraulic hoses for cracks—cold temperatures make rubber brittle .

• Never stop air supply during drilling or rod lifting to prevent jamming; lift the hammer 2 rod lengths above the hole bottom if pausing work .

• Store drills in temperature-controlled, dry spaces when not in use; cover hammer ends with protective caps .

• Clean air filters (daily for primary dry filters, every 3 days for secondary oil-immersed ones) to prevent dust buildup .
