What preparatory work should be done before the start of trenchless directional drilling construction?

The pre-construction preparations for trenchless directional drilling directly determine the success or failure of the project. The entire process can be summarized into five core steps: survey, design, site preparation, equipment check and pipe material preparation.
1. On-site Reconnaissance and Geological Survey
First of all, it is necessary to understand the distribution of underground pipelines, investigate the location and burial depth of existing pipelines (such as gas, power and water supply pipelines) to prevent damage during construction. At the same time, the geological conditions shall be verified; the stratum type (clay, sand or cobble layer) shall be identified through drilling, which will affect the selection of drill bits and the configuration of reamers. Finally, the groundwater level, obstacles and ground traffic conditions within the construction scope shall also be confirmed.
2. Design and Review of Construction Plan
Based on the survey data, the crossing trajectory (entry angle, exit angle, depth, etc.) shall be designed. A suitable drilling rig, drilling tools and mud ratio shall be selected according to the stratum characteristics. Meanwhile, protection schemes and emergency plans for adjacent pipelines and pavement settlement shall be formulated, and the plan shall be reviewed by experts or the property owner units when necessary.
3. Construction Site Preparation
It includes clearing and leveling the site, and developing a drilling rig area and a pipeline splicing area. Then, accurate setting-out shall be conducted with instruments such as a total station according to the design coordinates to determine the entry point, exit point and drilling rig position. Finally, working pits at the entry and exit points shall be excavated for drill bit positioning and mud circulation.
4. Equipment and Material Inspection
Comprehensive maintenance and test operation shall be carried out on key equipment such as drilling rigs, mud pumps, drill pipes and probing rods. At the same time, the quality of pipe
