Emergency Handling Guide for Flooded Directional Drills

If a directional drill is flooded, it must be handled promptly; otherwise, the operation and service life of the drill will be affected. The inspection and treatment mainly involve the following parts:

 I Engine water ingress

In case of engine water ingress (especially from floodwater, which may cause silt and sand sedimentation), major disassembly is not recommended. This is because major disassembly can damage the originally well-matched mating surfaces, requiring re-grinding and thus significantly reducing the effective service life. For example, as described, if the 0.8mm piston ring gap is intact, it can continue to be used; however, disassembly would necessitate replacement. The engine can be treated as follows:

1. Drain all the oil-water mixture from the oil pan. Rinse with clean water until no dirt flows out, then use kerosene or light diesel to rinse the oil pan. Add a sufficient amount of cleaning oil (diesel) until it fills up to the oil filler port (or until the cleaning oil overflows, as some machines have their exhaust pipes in the middle of the engine). Insert compressed air as far as possible into the lower part of the cleaning oil for boiling-type flushing, which can mix the silt deposited on components with the cleaning oil. Stop and drain the oil when the valve rocker assembly is visually clean (checked through the oil filler port).

2. Remove the fuel injectors and inject kerosene or light diesel into the cylinders. After allowing some to seep in (to rinse the silt in the piston ring gaps), flush with compressed air, extract the cleaning oil, add low-viscosity lubricating oil, and simultaneously add lubricating oil to the cleaned oil pan.

3.After checking the hydraulic oil tank, manually crank the engine a dozen times, extract the residual lubricating oil from the piston tops, reinstall the fuel injectors, and clean the fuel circuit.

II. Hydraulic system

1. Extract the unspoiled hydraulic oil from the top of the hydraulic oil tank, drain the oil-water mixture from the bottom (including the hydraulic pump suction pipeline), clean the hydraulic oil tank and filter screen, and add new hydraulic oil (other parts of the hydraulic system do not need cleaning).

2. Use the starter to drive the hydraulic pump to idle until the hydraulic oil discharged by the pump contains no bubbles.

III. Reducer

Clean the rotary reducer with cleaning oil, and add lubricating oil after it passes inspection.

IV.Gear racks, cylinder chains

The grease in the gear racks, cylinder chains, and their internal components should be drained and cleaned once the machine is operational.

V. Engine intake system

It is advisable to disassemble the intake manifold and rinse it with water until clean, then replace the air filter.

VI. Electrical system

Disassemble, clean, and dry the electrical system to prevent rust. Before starting, install only the necessary fuses; after starting, gradually install the remaining ones to avoid undetected short-circuit faults.

VII. Final startup of the drill

Start the machine and run it at low idle speed for a few minutes. Check if the engine oil and hydraulic oil have deteriorated (engine oil is likely to deteriorate due to residual water in the lubricating oil passages; if so, replace it immediately). If no abnormalities are found, conduct a test run.

Major disassembly of the machine is not recommended after it has been flooded.
