The Core Functions of Drilling Mud in HDD Construction

2026-05-30

In horizontal directional drilling (HDD) trenchless construction, most operators focus on machine pullback force, torque and drill tool configuration, while ignoring that the mud system determines the success of the whole drilling project. Reasonable mud formula and stable flow rate effectively reduce common construction risks such as stuck drill pipe, hole collapse and pullback failure, which is an essential supporting process for safe and efficient pipeline installation.

1. Cooling and Lubricating Drilling Tools

During long-distance drilling and reaming, continuous friction between drill tools and stratum generates massive heat. Circulating mud quickly cools down drill bits and drill rods, and forms a protective lubricating film on metal surfaces. This significantly reduces frictional resistance, improves drilling efficiency, lowers tool wear, and extends the service life of drilling accessories.

2. Carrying and Removing Cutting Debris

Drilling produces large amounts of sediment and rock cuttings inside the hole. Accumulated debris may cause hole blockage and stuck pipe. Drilling mud has excellent suspension and carrying capacity, which transports underground cuttings back to the ground through mud circulation. It keeps the borehole clean and smooth for subsequent reaming and pipeline pullback procedures.

3. Stabilizing Borehole Wall and Preventing Collapse

Soft soil, sand layer and backfill stratum are the most common complex geological conditions in HDD projects. These loose formations are prone to hole collapse and hole shrinkage after drilling. Drilling mud forms a dense filter cake on the borehole wall, balances underground pressure, stabilizes the hole structure, and maintains the integrity of the designed drilling trajectory.

4. Reducing Pullback Resistance and Improving Success Rate

Pipeline pullback is the most critical and high-risk stage in HDD construction. Fully circulated mud fills the entire borehole and forms a lubricating isolation layer between the pipeline and soil. It greatly reduces friction during the pullback process, avoids pipeline deformation and damage, and significantly improves the success rate of large-diameter and long-distance pipeline installation.

5. Stabilizing Drilling Trajectory and Improving Accuracy

Stable mud pressure balances the internal force of the borehole, reduces bit deviation caused by uneven formation hardness, ensures the drill advances strictly according to the designed path, and improves the overall accuracy and standardization of the construction project.

Drilling mud is never a simple auxiliary water supply process, but a core supporting system for horizontal directional drilling construction. Adapting professional mud formulas and circulation parameters to different geological conditions can effectively reduce risks, improve working efficiency and save construction costs, which represents standardized and professional HDD construction technology.
