Horizontal directional drilling rigs have been used more and more widely in underground pipeline laying, the technology has become more mature, and the adaptability has become stronger.

On September 17, 2025, Inner Mongolia Jinrun Construction Engineering Co., Ltd. successfully completed the directional drilling and crossing project of a natural gas pipeline in a certain area of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. This construction project employs the Gudeng GS450-L type horizontal directional drilling rig. The total length of the pipeline laid reaches 960 meters, with a pipe diameter specification of 168 millimeters. The engineering geological conditions are sandstone layers. After testing, the compressive strength of the rock is between 20 and 30 megapascals. The total construction period was 12 days, among which the drilling of the guide hole took 5 days, the reaming operation lasted for 7 days, and the final pipeline towing stage was successfully completed in just 12 hours. This project has created a typical case of efficient construction under complex geological conditions.

Sand Content Determination in Drilling Fluids

The sand content meter is a simple, reliable, and accurate instrument for measuring the sand content in drilling fluids. It employs a mesh screen separation method, using a 200-mesh sieve (particles larger than 0.074 mm in diameter) to determine the volume percentage of sand in the fluid. According to API standards, bentonite used in drilling fluids must meet specific sand content limits.

High sand content in drilling fluids can lead to several issues:

1. Reduced fluid viscosity and increased density.
2. Loose mud cake formation, compromising wall protection.
3. Increased cuttings accumulation at the drill bit, raising the risk of stuck pipe.
4. Accelerated wear of mud pumps and potential circulation failure, which may bury the drill string.

For horizontal directional drilling (HDD) operations, minimizing sand content is critical. Industry standards typically require sand levels to not exceed 2% to ensure optimal performance and equipment longevity.
